Ochre Adit in Złoty Stok

The Ochre Adit is a separate underground site that is part of the tourist complex of the Gold Mine in Złoty Stok - the oldest gold mining centre in Poland. The adit was officially opened to visitors on 30 April 2017.

Characteristics

The tour route is about 130 m long. The excavated tunnel is winding and narrow, and its walls shimmer in shades of red, yellow and orange thanks to natural iron compounds (ochre) - which makes the adit one of the most photogenic underground routes in Poland. The site also presents the history of mining and the chemistry involved in the production of ochre pigments.

Context

For about 700 years Złoty Stok was one of the most important centres of gold and arsenic extraction in Poland and Europe. The Ochre Adit is an extension of the offering of the mine's main route.
