Railway viaduct in Bolesławiec

The stone railway viaduct over the valley of the Bóbr River in Bolesławiec is one of the longest stone railway viaducts in Poland and in this part of Europe. It is 490 m long, 8 m wide and 26 m high, and its structure consists of 35 semicircular spans resting on massive pillars.

Location and surroundings

The viaduct stretches over the Bóbr valley in Bolesławiec (Lower Silesian Voivodeship). Coordinates: about 51.26881°N, 15.55087°E.

History

Construction was carried out in 1844-1846 to the design of the Prussian architect Friedrich Engelhardt Gansel, modelled on Roman aqueducts. Sandstone from nearby Dobra was used for the construction. The ceremonial opening was performed on 17 September 1846 by the Prussian king Frederick William IV. The central span was blown up on 10 February 1945 by retreating German troops and rebuilt in 1947.

What to see

Since 2006 the structure has been illuminated (a set of projectors), which makes it impressive both by day and at night. After modernisation in 2009, the line allows train traffic at up to 160 km/h.

Who is it for

An attraction for enthusiasts of technical monuments, photography and railway history.
