Suspension Bridge in Ozimek

The oldest surviving iron suspension bridge with openwork pylons on the European continent - a chain bridge made entirely of iron. It is about 31.5 m long and 6.6 m wide.

The bridge spans the Mała Panew River in Ozimek (Opole Voivodeship). Coordinates: approx. 50.67639°N, 18.21223°E.

History

Built in 1825-1827 to the design of the royal ironworks inspector Karl Schottelius, made at the local Malapanew Ironworks; put into service on 12 September 1827. Entered into the register of monuments (A-1940/69) in 1969, and recognised as a Historic Monument in 2017. Thoroughly restored in 2009-2010.
