Swing Bridge in Giżycko

A historic swing bridge over the Łuczański Canal in Giżycko, whose entire span rotates 90 degrees, aligning parallel to the quay to let watercraft pass. It is about 20 m long and about 8 m wide.

Location and surroundings

The bridge connects the town with the area of Boyen Fortress across the Łuczański Canal (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship). Coordinates: approx. 54.036°N, 21.76°E.

History

Built in 1898 by the Beuchelt & Co. company from Zielona Góra. Destroyed in 1945, it was rebuilt in 1946. After the 1993 renovation, manual operation was restored - one person turns the roughly 100-tonne structure, and the cycle takes about 5 minutes.
