Iron Bridge in Opatówek

The oldest iron (cast-iron) bridge in Poland - a park footbridge erected in 1824 in a palace-and-garden complex. Single-span and arched, with four cast-iron girders; the span is about 10.3 m, the deck about 3.5 m wide.

Location and surroundings

The footbridge spans a former moat in the landscape park surrounding the palace (Opatówek, Kalisz County, Greater Poland Voivodeship).

History

The date 1824 is cast together with the central segment of the girder. It is presumed that the bridge was cast at the Roechling brothers' works in Saxony. Except for the balustrade, it has been preserved in a state close to the original; after years of neglect it has been restored.
