Welded Bridge in Maurzyce

The world's first welded road bridge. A single-span steel structure about 27 m long and about 6.2 m wide.

Location and surroundings

The bridge crosses the Słudwia River between Maurzyce (Zduny municipality) and Niedźwiada (Łowicz municipality), Łódź Voivodeship. Coordinates: approx. 52.13950°N, 19.87067°E.

History

Built in 1928-1929 by the K. Rudzki company, to the design of Prof. Stefan Bryła (in cooperation with Władysław Tryliński). Engineer Wenczesław Poniż redesigned the bridge from riveted to welded, reducing its weight from 70 to 56 tonnes. Entered into the register of monuments (no. 1031) in 1968. Awarded the American 'Historic Welded Structure Award' (1995). After being relocated in 1977 and restored in 2009, it was made available for visiting.
