Railway bridge over the Parnica in Szczecin

A historic railway bridge over the Parnica canal, originally built as a swing bridge with a cog mechanism, rotating on the central pillar. Three-span and double-track.

Location and surroundings

The bridge connects Kępa Parnicka with Zaleskie Łęgi in Szczecin (West Pomeranian Province), on the line between Szczecin Główny and Szczecin Port Centralny stations. Coordinates: approx. 53.41721°N, 14.56103°E.

History

Originally a swing bridge; in the first half of the 20th century two railway disasters occurred while crossing the rotated bridge, so after being taken over by the Polish authorities the structure was immobilised. To this day the swing structure beneath the central pillar has been preserved, together with the cog mechanism and the operator's cabin.
