Post Mill in Drewnica

A wooden post mill (grinding mill) from 1718, located in the village of Drewnica in Żuławy Wiślane. It is the oldest surviving structure of its kind along the entire Baltic coast and the only preserved post mill in the Żuławy region.

Location and surroundings

The mill stands in the north-western part of the village of Drewnica (near Mikoszewo), within Żuławy Wiślane, along the so-called Żuławy Loop.

History

The mill was built in 1718 by the Mennonites - settlers from the Netherlands who arrived in large numbers in the 16th century to Żuławy Wiślane. It served as a grain mill. Of the more than 100 windmills preserved until 1945 in Żuławy, four survive today (Drewnica, Palczewo, Pruszcz Gdański, Tczew), and the post mill remained only in Drewnica. Since 1962 the structure has been listed in the register of monuments (no. 201/N).

What to see

The characteristic roof shaped like an inverted boat with an overhang above the gallery and stairs. The whole structure is wooden, of timber-frame construction, clad with vertical boards. Inside, the mechanisms and several elements of the former equipment have been preserved.
