Museum of Folk Architecture - Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek

One of the oldest open-air museums in Poland (its beginnings in Königsberg in 1909-1913, later moved to Olsztynek), presenting the folk architecture of Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and Lithuania. On about 77 hectares, dozens of examples of rural architecture have been gathered, including a collection of windmills.

Windmills

The open-air museum displays various types of windmills, including a post mill from Wodziany dating from 1773 and paltrok-type windmills (among others from Ruska Wieś). They are a valuable example of the region's folk milling technology.

History

The museum was created on the initiative of a group of scholars (including the conservator Richard Dethlefsen) at the beginning of the 20th century in Königsberg; the first structures were set up on the outskirts of the local zoological garden in 1911-1913, and the collection was then moved to Olsztynek.
