Pilchowice Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant

The Pilchowice Dam on the Bóbr River is one of the oldest and tallest water dams in Poland and a valuable monument of hydrotechnical engineering. Together with its hydroelectric power plant, it forms a unique complex from the early 20th century.

History

The dam was built between 1904 and 1912 and put into operation on 16 November 1912; the official opening was performed by Emperor Wilhelm II. The authors of the plan for regulating the Oder basin were Prof. Otto Intze and engineer Curt Bachmann, while the dam builder was the Italian engineer Cucchiero. The dam is 62 m high; the wall is 120 m long at its base and 290 m along the crest.

What to see

The Pilchowice I power plant, with a capacity of about 7.6 MW, currently houses 6 turbine-generator sets (since 1921), and its equipment, unchanged since construction, is still in operation and ranks as a monument of technology. The impounded waters of the Bóbr formed Lake Pilchowickie.

Who it is for

An attraction for lovers of technology and landscape. The power plant itself is not open to visitors, but the dam and its crest can be viewed from the outside.
