The regulations in this area raise many questions, as not every motorhome is subject to electronic toll payments. It all depends primarily on the maximum authorised mass (MAM) of the vehicle or vehicle combination.
What Is e-TOLL?
e-TOLL is an electronic toll collection system used on selected sections of national roads in Poland. It replaced the previous viaTOLL system and operates using satellite-based vehicle positioning technology.
The system covers thousands of kilometres of motorways, expressways and selected national roads. Drivers do not need to stop at toll booths – charges are calculated automatically based on the route travelled.
Does Every Motorhome Have to Use e-TOLL?
No.
The most important criterion is the maximum authorised mass of the vehicle.
If your motorhome has a MAM of up to 3.5 tonnes, you are not required to use the e-TOLL system. Vehicles in this category have been exempt from electronic toll payments on roads managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) for several years.
The situation is different for owners of larger motorhomes.
Any motorhome with a MAM exceeding 3.5 tonnes is classified as a heavy vehicle and must be registered in the e-TOLL system when travelling on toll road sections. It does not matter whether the journey is private or business-related. What matters is the vehicle's maximum authorised mass.
Car and Caravan Combinations – What Should You Watch Out For?
This is where drivers most often make mistakes.
If you are travelling with a passenger car towing a caravan, the combined maximum authorised mass of the entire vehicle combination is what matters. For a long time, exceeding 3.5 tonnes meant that using e-TOLL was mandatory, even if the towing vehicle itself was an ordinary passenger car.
In practice, this meant that many popular car and caravan combinations were subject to electronic toll payments, even when used exclusively for holiday trips.
Planned Changes for Caravans
The good news for caravan enthusiasts is that the regulations in this area are changing.
In 2026, legislation was passed to exempt passenger cars towing caravans from the obligation to use e-TOLL, even if the combined MAM exceeds 3.5 tonnes. This change has long been advocated by the caravaning community and is intended to make travelling easier for families using caravans.
However, it is important to remember that these changes mainly concern passenger car and caravan combinations. Motorhomes with a MAM exceeding 3.5 tonnes remain subject to the e-TOLL system.
How Does the e-TOLL System Work?
Drivers of vehicles subject to electronic toll payments must create an e-TOLL account and register their vehicle.
Vehicle location data can be transmitted in several ways:
- using the e-TOLL PL mobile application,
- using an on-board unit (OBU),
- using an external GPS tracking system (ZSL).
Tolls are calculated automatically for the sections of road covered by the system. The amount charged depends on several factors, including the type of road, the vehicle's emission class and its category. Current toll rates can be checked using the toll calculator available on the official e-TOLL website.
What Happens If You Don't Use e-TOLL?
If a vehicle subject to the system is not registered or the driver fails to pay the required toll, an administrative penalty may be imposed.
Therefore, before every journey, it is worth checking whether your motorhome or car and caravan combination is subject to e-TOLL and whether all the necessary formalities have been completed.
How Can You Check Whether Your Vehicle Is Subject to Tolls?
The easiest way to start is by checking the information in your vehicle registration certificate.
If your motorhome has a MAM of up to 3.5 tonnes, you can travel around Poland without using the e-TOLL system.
If the MAM exceeds 3.5 tonnes, registration in the system is still required. For cars towing caravans, it is worth keeping up to date with current regulations, as the rules for private recreational vehicle combinations are being simplified.
Summary
The e-TOLL system does not apply to every caravaning enthusiast. Owners of motorhomes weighing up to 3.5 tonnes can travel around Poland without electronic road toll payments. The obligation only applies to larger motorhomes or, under the applicable regulations, certain vehicle combinations.
Before every journey, it is worth checking the latest regulations, as the rules governing caravaning in Poland are gradually changing.
